Over the last few months, El Poble Nou de Benitatxell Council has carried out works to improve the forest masses and prevent wildfires.
With an investment of 66,338.40 euros, the works have consisted of laying out perimeter firebreak areas in the urbanisations, eliminating dried pine trees, selective pruning and clearing and planting 200 carob, olive trees, kermes oaks and strawberry trees. In total, works have been carried out on a surface area of 180,000 m² on Calistros, Serra de la Serp and Pueblo Alcassar.
The goal of these forestry works was to help to protect against wildfires, both in urbanisations and forest masses, as well as to improve the environment and landscape of the natural areas of the municipality, favouring the sustainability of the forests, biodiversity and the recharge of aquifers.
The works have been carried out through the subsidies for sustainable forest management measures within the framework of the Rural Development Programme of the Valencia Community 2014-2020 of the Conselleria de Medio Ambiente, Infraestructuras y Territorio; the Municipal Strategic Fund for Forest Fire Prevention and Forest Management during 2024; the Conselleria de Justicia e Interior, and the subsidies for the execution of actions of the Local Forest Fire Prevention Plans of the Diputación Provincial de Alicante.
The Council of El Poble Nou de Benitatxell has a Local Fire Prevention Plan and a Sustainable Forest Management Plan, where the forestry works to be carried out every year are programmed, thus giving continuity to this important work.
